They’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember, building simply astonishing fast luxury saloon cars. This is the new Audi S6 TFSI quattro sedan and it’s also a story about a bloke named Jason.
The Meat & Bones
Based on the recently launched 8th generation Audi A6 Sedan, this high-powered model wearing the S6 nameplate features Audi’s 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol-driven motor. Part Sci-Fi engineering part raw muscle, the engine develops a very healthy 331 kW and 600 Nm of torque resulting in propelling this uber-luxury business saloon from 0 – 100 km/h in a mere 4.5 seconds. But it does all of this in a weirdly subtle and relaxed way!
In short, the S6 is comprised of;
• Price: R1 401 500 (R1 582 400 price as tested)
• Engine: 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol
• Power/Torque: 331 kW/600 Nm
• Transmission: 8-speed Tiptronic
• Fuel consumption: 8.3 L/100km
• Boot capacity: 520 litres
• Performance: 0-100 kph in 4.5 sec
But more importantly than its “on paper” figures is how it all comes together. It is a mixture of intoxicating power mixed with sublime luxury done in a way that’s two parts sleeper to one part hooligan. What on earth do I mean is what you should be asking yourself at this point, and the answer is a rather simple one. As I said earlier in this article, Audi has built fast luxury estate and saloon cars right from the beginning and the S6 is a perfect example of this!
It may share its motor with that of the more bonkers RS4 and RS5, however in the S6 things are more subtle. Make no mistake, the power is on tap, particularly evident by the way it utilises a clever 48 volt mild hybrid electric system to eliminate turbo lag and feed instantaneous power to the engine, but also by the way its quattro all-wheel-drive and the all-wheel-steering system sends power to all four wheels and ensures it has a pin-sharp and tight turning circle.
At this point, you might think that this whole article is all very nerdy and based on a simple onslaught of technical engineering, and you’d be correct to some degree but thankfully while the S6 is incredibly technical it does have a playful nature and serious levels of comfort. The interior is typical Audi. It is high-grade materials and a composition of three large and intuitive display screens.
Taking centre stage is the Audi MMI media system with haptic feedback. Below this monitor is a screen of the same display proportions, however, this is for all your seating and air conditioning controls. Finally in front of the driver is Audi’s familiar yet still astonishing 3D mapping based Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display.
All set in a world of vast space and comfort, the S6 easily seats five adults within its interior cabin space. It features a large 520-litre boot and makes for what is an “understated” yet incredibly elegant business class saloon. It forms part of a rare breed of modern vehicles which aren’t trying to shout louder than the next one, but rather deliver an iron-fisted might while looking somewhat unassuming and it is this bare honesty that will make you love what it does and always has stood for.
