Cars usually have a 12 volt battery and typically use that voltage to power components like motors and lights, so why don't sensors get the same treatment? This video explains why many sensors use 5 volts instead of 12, and how we ended up with specifically 5V in the first place.
Many sensors end up running on a 5-volt output from the ECU/PCM, so it's an important part of the car to understand, especially for diagnosing problems with sensors and electronics.
