They can never harm us, because they are a lower level species: to human existence there are seven layers, a ghost or spirit only has three. The only harm they can do is to frighten you, but they cannot enter, touch, hurt or harm you. The only thing we can do to relieve a spirit or ghost, is to offer shradda for their completion. With that help, they move to the peaceful waiting lounge before moving on to the next body.
