Day 66. 67km (78126kms 7yrs)
After a stationary month of delightful weather I set off from Giardino Dei Suoni into a thunderstorm. Though my heart was heavy saying goodbye to the family it felt fantastic to be back on the road at last. With a bus booked from Matera just two days away I had to catch the train north some of the way, but didn’t want to miss Alberobello and its famous Truelli so bought a ticket to Cisternino. Only as the train pulled in did I recognise the difference between Cisternino and Cisternino Città discovering I had an unexpected climb to the latter. As usual in a month of scarcely riding my bike fitness has all but gone (not to mention all the weight I happily gained from delicious Salento food!) So it was with some trepidation that I set about the climb, which turned out to be just about manageable.
Alberobello is indeed gorgeous and therefor awash with tourists even on this damp day. Very fortunately for me the rain abated in the couple of hours I wandered about its streets, returning the moment I elected to leave town.
It was forecast to be dry overnight but the ground, of course, was saturated so I was looking for a little trullo in which to camp. After a couple of tumbledown boarded up disappointments I found a place whose renovation appeared to be on hold. Here in the dry, sheltered from the wind I set up camp under the stone conical roof. An ideal spot to return to camping.
