Israel suffers from an acute shortage of public housing. In 2015, The Jewish Agency and the State of Israel signed an historic agreement to build 2,650 housing units to fill the need. Amigour, a Jewish Agency subsidiary and Israel’s largest public housing company, is managing the project. The housing is being built on land owned by The Jewish Agency and its supporters and is expected to cost $250 million. The state will provide a grant of up to 50% of the construction funds, and The Jewish Agency will fund the remainder from loans and designated donations.
Construction began at the beginning of 2017, is continuing according to schedule, and is expected to be completed within five years.
