DANNEMORA, NEW YORK — Two convicted murderers serving life sentences in adjoining cells pulled off an elaborate escape from a New York state maximum security prison between Friday night and Saturday morning.
The escaped prisoners were identified as Richard Matt and David Sweat. They escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, according to the New York Times.
The men escaped by drilling a hole through the wall at the back of their cells using power tools. They then walked onto a catwalk and drilled through a pipe before exiting through a manhole on a nearby street, the New York Times reported.
The men left clothing in their beds to make it appear they were asleep. They were discovered missing during a 5:30 a.m. bed check, according to the New York Times.
One of the escaped prisoners, David Sweat, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murder of a sheriff's deputy, Reuters reported.
