#1: A Niche Sites that’s all about YOU.
A lot of people tell us ideas they have for niche sites that go something like this...
“I have an interest in tennis, but I also really love fitness, and I think there’s a gap in the market for sharing fitness information specifically for Tennis players”.
Most of the time, the little solutions we’d love to have in our own lives are only good for us… they’re not going to make for good businesses.
The question to ask if you have that kind of idea is: “What evidence do I have that this gap in the market really does exist?” Can you see for example that a lot of people are searching for something like “strength and conditioning for Tennis?” Or, is there another business that exists, that seems to be really successful that’s already doing this kind of thing… Maybe you think you could do a better job?
If some of those things are in place, maybe your personal unique combination of interests and skills will be profitable. If they don’t, it’s always better to look for another idea.
#2 Niche Sites in markets that mainly contain cheap products.
I would never recommend even the most passionate lover of literature to start an affiliate site on books.
Affiliate marketing is a commission based business and the lower the price of products, the lower your affiliate revenue per sale. Promoting cheap products just means you have to make so many more sales (and attract so much more traffic) in order to be profitable.
#3: Is a Niche Site where the product you sell needs to be touched before someone can feel confident about buying it.
Think about a niche site where you review golf clubs. It’s nice to read about a golf club, and of course people research before they decide on which new putter to buy, or driver to buy… but before you’re buying an expensive club, you’re going to want to swing it around for a little bit!
Think about this compared to... a Vacuum cleaner. Do you need to touch a vacuum cleaner before you know it’ll do what you want? Not really. You want to make sure it has enough power, or a long enough cord, or that it can pick up pet hair, or that it’s not too heavy. But you don’t really care about how it feels in your hands.
If you’re selling that kind of product you have one less barrier to overcome in order to make the affiliate sale, and you’ll make much more money because of that.
#4: A niche site where the inherent value of the product you sell is highly subjective.
I’m sure there is one, but I’ve never seen a good niche site in the fine art market. This is strange in a way because there are very expensive products, and there are affiliate programs available. You could probably sell a handful of nice paintings a year as an affiliate and make a great little side income.
But there are too many possible reasons why someone might like a piece of fine art; Too many possible uses or purposes. Too many possible needs that might be being filled, which makes it very hard for you to speak to all of those people with a single piece of content, and make it valuable and appealing.
Stay away from markets where the product’s value is highly subjective, and you’ll be better off.
Ok #5: A niche site with too broad a focus.
I know you might want to start a site that’s about health, and also fitness, and also beauty and skin care, but with a personal development kind of angle sprinkled in as well… but don’t do it.
The way for little guys like us to win at affiliate marketing, is with quality content and a unique perspective, on a limited topic. We win by defining a specific group of people that we are going to make SO happy, and smart, and wonderful with our content, that they would not want to get their information anywhere else.
And trying to serve people interested in health, and also fitness, and also beauty, and personal development all from the same place… makes that task impossible.
