Random crits have become such a core part of TF2's identity that it's hard to imagine the game without them. Except it's not, because like every community server ever prefers it, but you get the point. "Rare high moment" jokes aside, most people really don't like random crits since they introduce unnecessary luck into an otherwise skillful game. But on top of the obvious, there's another more subtle reason to dislike them: they interfere with game balance itself. "No random critical hits" has been a meme stat for ages now, since it's completely useless in serious settings and only affects casual. But did you know that Valve ended up removing this stat entirely at one point? It was only for a single day, sure, but it provided an interesting look into how they balanced the game.
