January 29th is National Curmudgeons Day! A curmudgeon is defined as a curmudgeon’ is defined as an ill-tempered, disagreeable, and quarrelsome (often older) person. Curmudgeons Day is celebrated on the birthday of William Claude Dukenfield, better known as W.C. Fields, who often played a crusty and grumpy individual in films in the 1930s.
In honor of today, Howard letterpress printed an image of himself. The artwork for this image was made by our tour manager, Shawn, a couple years ago. That artwork was sent to OWOSSO Graphic Arts in Owosso, Michigan where the photo engraving was designed. Autographed prints by Howard are available in our museum store.
In regards to the phrase, in letterpress printing, a compositor is setting type upside down and left to right. However, many of the letters look very similar to each other. It is best to focus on the task at hand. That’s how you get the origin of the phrase “b’s and d’s you could also lose, if you don’t mind your p’s and q’s.” So take some advice from Howard and mind your p’s and q’s!
