"It's not that people resent China, but they've got a question mark, because they see this enormous economic power and they ask: Will this developing economy be matched by political development, development in the field of human rights as well? His answer to me was that China faced enormous challenges because you've got a relatively wealthy part of China but many, many poor people; that their economic development has a long way to go but that they recognise that political development should accompany that."

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Tony Blair, British Prime Minister:
"If the Chinese political system develops in a way that allows greater freedom and therefore greater cooperation, with not just the United States of America but with European countries and the UK as well, then I think there is a tremendous opportunity for us. And the purpose of the discussion that we've had just now has been to see if it's possible to have that type of strategic dialogue that allows you to resolve these questions in the right way."

STORYLINE:
China and Britain signed four agreements on Monday after talks between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.
China Southern Airlines Co., the nation's second-biggest airline, will buy 10 A330 planes made by Airbus SAS jetliners, with a total list price of 1.5 (b) billion US dollars.
The purchase includes eight A330-300 planes and two A330-200 planes, all to be delivered in 2007 and 2008, an Airbus official said.
Speaking to reporters after the meetings, Blair said he was optimistic that China would match its fast-paced economic development with greater respect for human rights and greater momentum toward democracy.
