Dr. Bailey, a Family Medicine physician, discusses why the age to begin screening for colorectal cancer was moved from 50 to 45 years of age due to the rise of colorectal cancer in the younger population. Colorectal cancer is one that may not have any symptoms you can feel, thus it is very important to be screened and catch things like polyps early. When caught in early stages of growth, polyps can be easily removed before they become harmful. If you notice things like blood in your stool, an overall change in bowel habits, abnormal abdominal pains, or are being told you are anemic for no apparent reason, you will want to make sure that you schedule a colonoscopy to make sure everything is being checked.
If you are uncomfortable with this initial strategy, you can sit down with your primary care physician and discuss other methods of testing, such as Cologuard. This helps create a picture osf your colon health for you and your doctor to discuss togther. The most important factor in all of this is that you are getting screened for colorectal cancer and you “don’t sit on colon cancer”.
