A behind-the-scenes look at the TRACE-E Musician in Residence Project, featuring interviews with performers and scientists, and extended footage from both concert and rehearsal for the final TRACE-E events. Central to the project's aim is the artistic response to the growing impact of electronic waste, circular economy and the global environmental crisis.
Robin Browning spent four months as Musician in Residence with the TRACE-E Project at University of Southampton, meeting with scientists, engineers, environmentalists and semiconductor specialists as well as musicians, artists and fashion designers. The result of this intense period of exploration and interdisciplinary research was a complete album of musical tracks, which were brought to life with professional musicians in Turner Sims, Southampton, as part of University of Southampton's Science & Engineering Festival (SOTSEF) 2022.
Performances were interspersed with dance, spoken word and a strong educational element for the largely young audience, as well as a looping video installation, elements of audience interaction and live sampling. The music written by Robin fuses electronic sounds, motifs and loops with string players from SÓN Orchestra, other acoustic musicians and spoken word.
