'On This Day - 18 May 1972 - The Queen and Wallis Simpson Pose For Photographs in Paris'
The Queen paid a visit to her uncle, Duke Edward of Windsor and the Duchess of Windsor at their home in Paris.
The Duke was too ill to have tea with the Queen but she, Prince Philip, and Prince Charles went to see him in his bedroom.
With the Duke unable to leave the house, Wallis Simpson took charge of the meeting and greeting, posing for a photograph with the Queen.
The abdication of Edward VIII to marry the woman he loved paved the way for Princess Elizabeth to become Queen after her father, King George V ascended the throne.
