10 basic Romanian pronunciation rules
Rule #1. Romanian spelling is phonetic, so you must sound each letter clearly.
For example, cană – cup.
Rule 2. The word’s accent and sounds are very similar to Italian.
For example, amic – amico – friend. Amic (Romanian), amico (Italian), friend (English). Amic.
Rule 3. Sounds rarely differ between words, which means that any letter of the alphabet is pronounced the same way every time, regardless of its location in the word.
For example, letter “b” in bagaj – luggage is pronounced the same as letter “b” in zabt – struggle.
Rule 4. The most difficult vowels for foreigner to pronounce are “ă” and “î / â.” î din “i” or â din “a”.
For example, lanternă – flashlight, început - beginning, or mână – hand.
Rule 5. The only vowel which is pronounced differently depending of its position in the word is “i” (letter “i”).
For example, insulă – island, pantofi – shoes, centimetri – centimeters.
Rule 6. The letter “r” is rolled or trilled.
For example, rânduri – rows.
Rule 7. Letters K, Q, W, and Y appear only in words of foreign origin and the pronunciation of W and Y depends on the origin of the word they appear in.
For example, darwiniană – Darwinian or yankeu – Yankee.
Rule 8. Apart from “acolo” which means there, very few words end in “o” with the exception of loanwords.
For example, audio or video.
Rule 9. A question that ends with a verb often uses a rising tone on the last syllable or two.
For example, Ce mai faci? How are you?
And Rule 10. Romanian is a syllable-timed language, which means that each syllable takes about the same amount of time to pronounce regardless of the stress.
For example, elicopter – helicopter, cașcaval – cheese, mâine – tomorrow.
And that’s the end of the fourth Learn Romanian Vlog. Reguli de pronunție. Pronunciation rules.
