Anthony Coulls is at Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, to tell the story of our 1891 North Eastern Railway snow plough, a wooden giant used to shift huge piles of snow in a bid to keep lines running in the depths of winter.
Snow ploughs like this one were frequently called upon to clear snow drifts as high as 14ft on the Stainmore line, which included the highest point on the trans-Pennine route at 1,370ft (418m).
