The studies showing chlorella’s effective at helping remove heavy metals and other harmful compounds from the body have only been done in animal subjects, particularly rats. And you wanna know something worse? It’s looking at detoxifying rat testicles, so yeah, not super applicable to humans. However, the ability of chlorophyll to “totally abolish” DNA damage of human cells exposed to carcinogens was documented in a lab setting, and later one a bunch of crazy humans were paid enough to drink a solution of radioactive material with or without chlorophyll. And this study found the chlorophyll bound to the radioactive material and prevented it from being absorption into the bloodstream demonstrating substantial evidence chlorophylls can strongly inhibit uptake of harmful chemicals. So score one for chlorella!
What about using chlorella to boost our immune system and prevent infections like the flu, pneumonia or the common cold? Approximately 95% of all infections are happen because a bacteria or virus penetrates our in our eyes, nose, or mouth. These surfaces are protected by antibodies like IgA, that provide a barrier to prevent viruses from getting inside our bodies. When levels of this antibodies are dropped, it’s easier to get a full on infection from a virus or bacteria. A study showed high-intense physical training significantly dropped IgA levels, but not in those given chlorella each day. So, taking chlorella intake may counteract the reduced IgA secretion during athletic training. Even if you’re a recreational athletes, chlorella may help boost your immune system after an intense workout. Ok so it’s potentially good for blocking harmful chemicals and boosting our immune system, but what about protecting our heart health? A meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials of chlorella for cholesterol, involving hundreds of subjects, found those taking chlorella lowered their LDL cholesterol or “bad cholesterol” an average of eight points and some even lowered their blood pressure a few points.
For the vast majority of people, chlorella can be considered helpful if you’re not allergic to it. It’s packed with lots of nutrients, and does have higher quality evidence as of January 2021 for its use in certain situations. I will note that kale is cheaper and just a nutritious as chlorella, but if you’re looking for an extra green to add to a smoothie or sprinkle on your popcorn, Chlorella is defiantly my choice over other supplements like Spirulina.
