Dr. Lily Wong-Kisiel, a neurologist at Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, discusses infantile spasms. Visit [ Ссылка ] to request an appointment.
Infantile spasms, also known as epileptic spasms, do not always occur in infancy. These spams are a type of seizure where the head comes down, the arms elevate, and the legs come forward. When they occur, it looks like the child or patient is doing abdominal crunches. These patients should consider a second opinion, especially as some are initially diagnosed as having a GI reflex or abdominal condition.
These spasms often happen in clusters together over a short period of time, often occurring when the patient is falling asleep or waking up. This type of seizure disorder needs to be diagnosed early. If left undetected, infantile spasms or epileptic spams may cause developmental delays or plateaus.
