The ailing pound gained some ground on Thursday morning as surprisingly upbeat retail sales figures were taken as evidence of 'impressive' consumer resilience. The figures, which are seen as an acid test for UK spending power, showed that Brits spent more money than expected last month, despite fears of a recession and the enduring Brexit paralysis. Retail sales nudged up 0.2 per cent month-on-month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), defying predictions of a 0.2 per cent fall, thanks mostly to a near-7 per cent jump in online spending. That's the biggest rise in online sales in three years.
