After twenty years, I decided to re-record this original acoustic song that I wrote in my twenties, Smoke Rings (In the Dark)....circa 1991 or 1992.
Yes...I'm well aware that there's a country song by Gary Allan with the same title, but I know that I wrote this over a decade before that song was ever released.
At some point I'll get around to re-recording and dusting off a few others. Thanks for listening!
For those of you that think that budget studio quality audio is impossible, my "studio" setup consists of a Guitar Hero USB mic direct to laptop.
All the tracks were de-noised using iZotope RX3, mixed in FL Studio 11 and then mastered with iZotope 5.
I added some strings in the background for a little depth but laid off most of my usual massive verbs. The lyrics are below.
Smoke Rings (In the Dark)
A thousand miles of arguments
and different points of view
Bridge the distance
Between me and you
and all the things we never say
pave the road along the way
and underneath the bridge
an ocean full of tears we've cried
keeps me from the other side
and I will never find the answers
to the questions I don't ask
and all the lovin and romancin
that we used to know in the past
lies across the water
and in the morning you will wake up
and we'll make the oceans part
but for now I'll sit here thinking
blowing smoke rings in the dark
Happiness was our love affair with life
you held me close and you whispered to me in the night
you told me things
that you'd never say before
I really don't care
who's wrong or right
anymore
and I will help you find the answers
to the questions you won't ask
and I will show you
all the lovin and romancin
that we used to know in the past
if you'd let me in
and in the morning you will wake up
and we'll make the oceans part
but for now I'll sit here thinking
blowing smoke rings in the dark
