(10 Oct 2007) HEADLINE: Robot masseur in Japan gives facials
CAPTION: With steely arms sprouting cables and wires, the WAO-1 robot looks nothing like a relaxation device. But researchers in Tokyo hope the contraption will soon be deployed across Japan to give therapeutic facial massages. (Oct. 10)

It may look like a futuristic torture device, but this robot is designed to make you relax.
Researchers in Tokyo developed the WAO-1 (W-A-O-One) for patients with jaw-related medical problems who require treatment with facial massages.
The robot's arms are fitted with ceramic spheres and are controlled by a complex set of algorithms designed to emulate a human massage.
The robot is still awaiting government approval before it becomes available to hospitals and the public.
But with Japan leading the world in consumer robotics, that shouldn't take too long.
A robot that gives shampoos has already been widely deployed at hair salons across the country.
