In this video I explain how I made this live techno performance patch which I demoed at an event for the Dublin Modular meetups recently. It uses a lot of tricks from the PolyEffects Hector, Empress Effects Euroburo and Tesseract Tukra combined with a powerful MIDI controller.
This video is a long one, so use the chapter markers to jump to the section that interests you. I break the patch down into its parts and explain how they all come together.

Note: I was gifted the Hector by PolyEffects but this video is not sponsored by them, or anyone, in any way.
Topics that I'll cover include:
- Building a sidechain patch on Hector
- Creating master performance effects for builds/drops
- Using the Tesseract Tukra as master clock
- How to MIDI map sample selection per track on the Tukra
- Euclidean beats
- Using the TEO expander to break audio out for parallel effects
- MIDI control of a modular patch
- Using the PolyEffects Hector as an end-of-chain unit
- Tricks for MIDI mapping modular patches
How I set up the MIDI routing:
- Faderfox MX12 over USB to PolyEffects Hector
- Hector MIDI TRS out to Empress Euroburo TRS MIDI in
- Faderfox MIDI out to Tukra TRS MIDI in
Euroburo and Hector compliment each other well. Hector has ports of the Mutable Instruments modules which is brilliant. It has a lovely touch screen with a nice UI for the MI algorithms which helps with some of the more complex settings, and how Clouds works too. It also has the Parasites modes for Warps and Clouds so you get all of that too.
The Hector adds Convolution reverb and you can load your own cabs. Not to be outdone Euroburo has great effects from Empress. It has a more tactile UI by pressing buttons, which can also be controllers and reflect CV and audio. There's currently a larger community of users and hundreds of user created patches available on patch-storage for the Euroburo so you don’t have to start from scratch. Of course it’s harder to reverse-engineer a Zebu patch without some work or good documentation as there’s no editor.
They both have most of the basic modules you’d expect from a modular system; LFOs, sequencers, attenuverters, mixers etc. Zebu separates out CV from audio so you get 4 CV in and out but only a stereo in and out. Hector has 6 ins and 8 outs which can send and receive either audio or CV. So you’re not tied to just a stereo mix, and CV and audio are treated the same way. Zebu treats CV and audio as two different things; you can modulate filter cutoff with an audio signal on Zebu like you can in real modular.
