This was my first-time multiday winter silent hiking experience. My trail choice fell on a popular summer hiking trail from Cesis to Valmiera in Latvia. The first day started calmly from Cesis city, on the way there were red cliffs, which are a big thing in Gauja National Park, made by Gauja river erosion. The trail itself is not so popular during the winter time and it was obvious due to the absence of people's footprints on the snow. By the end of the first day, my plan was to make a camping spot next to the Cave right on the Striķupe River, but somehow I managed to get lost in the woods, and while I was navigating out into the right direction the precious daylight time ran out and I was forced to make camp about 1.5km away from the initial spot. On the second day I woke up early to catch up with the plan, on the way to that cave, there were a lot of animal footprints, assuming that it was their trail to the drinking spot on the river. During the midday of the second day, I managed to hike a total of around 22km and I remember how I laughed when I noticed the road sign with directions to Cesis and a distance of only 8km. On the second day air temperature slowly started to increase and the tree's snowcaps started slowly to melt and drop down, right on me, during the whole day there was only one close moment when snow mass fell on me, but luckily it felt on my backpack, but if I was slow for 1 second, maybe it hit me right in the head. For the second night, I made the decision to sleep in the open field, to avoid dropping snow on my tent, only the next morning I realised that I made camp right on the hunting fields. The morning of day 3 I was full of the energy and motivation to finish the hike in Valmiera City, due to increased air temperature snow became much harder to hike on, and my speed dropped, but I still managed to hike around 2km per hour. It was a bit disappointing how the scenery changed from the white snowcaps on the tree's top to just green trees but it's nature and we can't do anything. During the 3 day hike, I didn't meet any other hiker or a backpacker, so during the winter season this trail is very quiet and peaceful.
