STORYLINE
Thousands of people gathered in central Rome on Saturday to protest against the Italian government's policies on security and taxation.
The protesters also demanded fresh elections during the march, which was organised by the opposition right wing National Alliance party.
National Alliance party leader Gianfranco Fini arrived on the back of a motorbike for the event before addressing the crowd.
Taking part in the march was Maurizio Gasparri, former Minister of Communications and member of the National Alliance party.
"All the illegal immigrants, all the problems caused by clemency measures, these are the reasons why all these people are demonstrating. These are ordinary people who gathered here with other groups to give a clear answer to the disaster caused by (Prime Minister Romano)Prodi," Gasparri said.
Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of the Italy's wartime Fascist dictator, and a member of National Alliance party also attended the protest marching together with other party members in front of the demonstrators.
"This is a protest against precise problems: security which is now a national emergency above all since Romania entered the European Union," said Mussolini.
Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi faces a tough month, with a growing list of planned strikes against his government's efforts at economic reform.
The main trade unions on Wednesday called on three and a half (m) million workers to stage an eight-hour strike on October 26 to protest against the lack of funds in the 2008 budget to renew future contracts for public workers.
