UN Vessel Shelled
A UN chartered aid vessel carrying 7,000 tonnes of food has been targeted by shelling off the coast of Aden. A provincial government official accused Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels, who control several neighbourhoods in the city of imposing a food blockade by not allowing the ship to dock at Aden’s port, which is controlled by pro-government fighters. He claimed that Houthi shelling forced the ship to turn back as it approached the port.22
CLINIC FIRE
There has been a gas explosion at the Maysaloun clinic in Syria’s northeast province of Hasakah. At least 40 people have been killed and dozens are injured. According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, no final death toll has been reported and many of those injured in the fire are in critical condition. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
KASHMIR BORDER BATTLE
The Indian army announced it has killed four militants at the disputed Kashmir border with Pakistan while defending their military base from an attack. The army said a sixteen-hour gun battle had occurred after people were spotted near the border town o 2 Since 1989, Kashmiri resistance groups in Indian-held2 Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule for independence or unification with neighbouring Pakistan.
FIFA BRIBE DENIED
South Africa has denied that the 10 million dollar payment it made to FIFA in 2008 was a bribe to host the 2010 World Cup. Currently, U.S. and Swiss authorities have initiated concurrent investigations for widespread corruption within the football organisation. Several top officials have been arrested on allegations of spending tens of millions of dollars in bribes. Newly re-elected FIFA president Sepp Blatter has accused U.S. Department of Justice of conducting what he claims to be a “hate” campaign against him and FIFA.
