STORYLINE:
Thousands of Brazilians took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday in one of many May Day rallies around the country to protest against the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Representatives of the two biggest workers unions in the country, opposition politicians, representatives from the Catholic Church and the Landless Movement (MST) all participated in the protest in Rio''s Flamengo Park.
The leader of the Landless Movement, Joao Pedro Stedille, said the government needed to expand its land reform programme to shift the balance of power in the country.
Also at the rally was Dom Thomas Balduino, President of the Catholic Church''s Pastoral Land Commission. He said the federal government was not dealing with the social tensions in the country.
New unemployment figures released this week show another rise in the numbers of Brazilians out of work.
Unemployment is a major issue for for Brazil''s working class.
April, known as the Red Month, saw an increase in social action in Brazil: 137 land invasions took place all over the country, with over 50-thousand families moving onto government-owned property.
In the same month, the Roofless Movement in Sao Paulo invaded empty public buildings to draw attention to the thousands of homeless people in most of Brazil''s big cities.
There were also widespread strikes in the public service sector.
