Martinů’s Concerto for harpsichord and small orchestra (1935) draws from the specific sound qualities of this often ignored historical instrument. The Concerto was written by order of the harpsichordist Marcelle de Lacour, according to Martinů’s words on the woman, the one who “plays on the radio and posh societies”. For Martinů this was, at the time, when he was searching for any opportunity to compose, a very attractive offer.
The “Neo” style, typical for the NeoKlasik orchestra, presents itself in the Concerto for harpsichord primarily through the relaxed, fast-changing tonal center through the course of the piece. The mutual interaction between the harpsichord and the piano creates an especially impressive effect, which functions are a modern basso continuo. Another “modernity” can be felt through the the concertante roles of the solo wind instruments in the orchestra, in the flutes for instance, which receive their own artistic space, and we don’t follow a mere duality between harpsichord and orchestra as a whole.
