We celebrated International Jazz Day 2022 at The ANFE Italian Club, as the Brisbane Jazz Club had suffered extensive damage during recent flooding.
International Jazz Day began with a Vocal Workshop/Masterclass (Jazz Singers’ Jam Night Toolkit: Filling in the Gaps) with around 35 singers and 3 great musicians (John Reeves/Andrew Shaw and Reuben Bradley), followed by a free Public Forum with the open ended question, “What does jazz mean to us today in 21st Century” + an open jam at the end. On the panel, we were delighted to have Dr Irene Bartlett, leader in the field of contemporary commercial music (CCM) styles, vocal pedagogy and PhD Supervisor, Coordinator of Contemporary Voice, Head of Pedagogy and Jazz Vocal studies at Queensland Conservatorium of Music (The Con), Griffith University, Dr Lauren Istvandity, 2017 John Oxley Library Fellowship - Reminiscing about jazz in Queensland: Preserving pre-1980 oral histories for the Queensland Jazz Archive Collection. Her work focussed on collecting stories of talented musicians, ambitious entrepreneurs and receptive audiences who shaped the jazz scene across the state from the 30s to 80s, and Andrew Shaw, established jazz bass player for 36 years, bandleader, educator, former festival artistic director with an extensive discography and passion for jazz history, with Ingrid James, Masters of Music Studies (The Con), producer/host/jazz vocalist, as moderator. The evening Gala Concert at the ANFE Italian Club Newstead, curated and produced by Ingrid James, sponsored by the Brisbane City Council, broadcasted and supported by MBS Light, presented a 100 years of jazz in a night of jazz diversity, from the Great American Songbook through Brazillian and World rhythms to contemporary original compositions performed by wonderful local artists - Museaus Contemporary Vocal Ensemble (MD Sean Andrews), Sophie Min Trio, The View from Madeleine’s Couch, John Reeves Trio with Ingrid James, Levi and Gabe Kikkert and Galapagos Duck (remembering Willy Qua). Big heartfelt thanks to Paul Day, Alan Western, Kirsten White, Karli and Hamilton Westley, Irene Mcleod, Naomi Doessel, Glen Kerridge, Mark Smith (Real Productions), Dave Parnell, Ian Lock, Michelle Gonsal, Shez Crofts, BJC volunteers, Chris Nainby, MBS Light, John Carrier, John Diegan and all the presenters, Brisbane City Council, Maria and Teresa and staff from ANFE Italian Club, Geoff for taking great photos at the gala .... and many more! Special thanks to Naomi and Glen who worked hard behind the scenes all day.
