STORYLINE:
A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) convoy in the Afghanistan capital of Kabul on Saturday, killing four civilians, Afghan officials said.
The attack in western Kabul also wounded five civilians and a foreigner, said General Ali Shah Paktiawal.
Paktiawal confirmed casualties and injuries from the scene of the blast.
"This morning around 08:00am (0330GMT) a suicide bomber detonated himself. As a result four people were killed and five others were wounded which includes one foreigner," he said.
He said a NATO vehicle, a foreigner's vehicle and seven civilian vehicles were damaged in the attack.
The suicide bomber also died.
Witnesses gave a higher casualty count than police, and said seven or eight people had died.
The bomb apparently targeted a three-vehicle convoy of SUVs (standard utility vehicles), damaging one although it was able to continue driving a half-kilometre (quarter-mile) down the road before coming to a halt with a punctured tyre.
US armoured jeeps arrived at the scene afterward suggesting the three SUVs may have been carrying American personnel.
Paktiawal gave no details on the nationality of the wounded foreigner.
Zabiullah Mujahid, who claims to speak for the Taliban, claimed the group's responsibility for the blast.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force said it was looking into the report of the attack, but had no immediate information.
The blast was the second in as many days.
On Friday a suicide bomber targeted a NATO convoy at Tirin Kot in Uruzgan province, killing 10 people including five children and a Dutch soldier.
The blast came as a wave of violence swept Afghanistan - the worst - in the volatile south.
