Crime against women in India has been on the rise year-on-year since 2015 except the pandemic year. While the rising graph is concerning, survivors live in fear of not only being outed in society, where they are stigmatised, but also of having to deal with the insensitive police, legal and healthcare systems.
According to the National Health Survey of India, between 2019 and 2021, 14% women sought help after any form of physical or sexual violence. Only 2.4% of them went to a doctor. 77% have never sought help or told anyone about the violence.

Watch this documentary by Amitha Balachandra on the barriers faced by sexual assault survivors in accessing healthcare.
