MACROLIDES-
The macrolides are a class of natural products that consist of a large macrocyclic lactone ring to which one or more deoxy sugars, usually cladinose and desosamine, may be attached. The lactone rings are usually 14-, 15-, or 16-membered. Macrolides belong to the polyketide class of natural products.
Classification-
azithromycin (brand name Zithromax),
clarithromycin (brand names Klacid and Klacid LA),
erythromycin (brand names Erymax, Erythrocin, Erythroped and Erythroped A),
spiramycin (no brand), and.
telithromycin (brand name Ketek).
Macrolides are used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae) and limited Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Bordetella pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae), and some respiratory tract and soft-tissue infections.
The macrolides are bacteriostatic antibiotics with a broad spectrum of activity against many gram-positive bacteria. ... Five macrolide antibiotics are currently available for use-
erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, fidaxomicin and telithromycin, the latter being a related ketolide.
