(20 Apr 1959) Prince Philip was the visitor to a far-away island in mid-Pacific, near the Equator. His Royal Highness was greeted with a war-dance and was presented with a necklace as a peace-offering. Another highlight was the triumphal procession through the village with an escort by ladies of the island, and Prince Philip borne aloft on a Pacific island throne! He then inspected the Guard of Honour formed by men of the Gilbert and Ellice constabulary. Afterwards, he strolled through a village "high street", to see the people live their everyday lives in this distant colony. Then, Prince Philip went sailing in one of the local, out-rigger racing canoes. At one point in the tour, the New Zealand frigate "Rotoiti" acted as escort to "Britannia". The Prince decided to visit her and went across. From the Islands, the route now lay through the tropical seas of the Pacific to the Panama Canal.
