A rare film whose making is as much of a story as the actual plot
Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah took a decade-and-a-half to be made, but is now synonymous with its star, Meena Kumari, who died just after it finally released.
Pakeezah, When the movie released on 4 February 1972, it was not an immediate success. That is understandable, because Pakeezah was not originally intended for the 1970s audience, which had grown accustomed to the frothy romances of the ’60s and was getting ready to welcome kitschy masala films and the Angry Young Man trope. Pakeezah had been in the making since the mid-1950s — a slower, more graceful time.

There’s a proliferation of YouTube channels that talk about things related to Hindi films. Yaadein Nayee Puraani is no different. It too discusses Hindi films and personalities associated with it. Yet it intends to distinguish itself as a channel that puts a premium on that which draws us emotionally to a particular film or a personality, be it an actor, a singer, a composer or a writer.
However, there are several constraints on our ability to produce videos that can win people’s heart, the biggest one being that we cannot use copyrighted material as there’s no clarity on the doctrine of fair use of such material, especially when it comes to using film footage and songs. So, we will limit our usage of any such copyrighted thing in our videos to just a few seconds, considering it fair use, and for that we will be thankful to the concerned copyright holder.
