I got asked all the time what type of approach I take to training pups. To get the best from my dogs I use Operant Conditioning. Operant Conditioning helps your dog be reliable regardless of the distance, duration, and distractions in the environment.

So you have a puppy now and you’re doing tons of research on what’s the best way to train them. There are lots of different ways that people approach dog training. Here at Harley and Sergio Dog Training we use operant conditioning. Not sure what operant conditioning is? Come with us and we will show you. Operant conditioning is the idea that we can increase or decrease a behavior with a consequence, don’t worry consequences aren’t always bad. The consequences of a response determines the probability of it being repeated. If a behavior is reinforced (rewarded) it will likely be repeated, and if the behavior is punished it will occur less frequently. In dog training we can either reinforce a behavior so that the dog does that behavior again or punish a behavior so that it doesn’t. Both reinforcement and punishment could be positive or negative, so in operant conditioning we have four possible ways to train our dog to do something. To easily understand this let’s put these four options in a table. If reinforcement is positive we add something pleasant for our pup, like food, toy, or affection. If reinforcement is negative we will remove something unpleasant like leash pressure. Remember the goal is to reinforce a behavior than we are trying to make sure the dog does this behavior again. Next, let’s look at punishment. If punishment is positive (than we add an unpleasant response to decrease the chance of the dog doing that behavior again. A great example of this is a leash pop. IF the punishment is negative than we would remove something positive. An example of this would be not giving your pup a treat until they do what you asked.
