Lugano Embraces Bitcoin and Tether for Tax Payments, Expanding Cryptocurrency Options
In a significant move, Lugano, Switzerland, has widened its spectrum of payment methods for taxes and community fees by including cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether's USDT stablecoin. The announcement, made on December 5, marks a pivotal step in the city's financial landscape.
Facilitated by Bitcoin Suisse, a prominent Swiss crypto gateway provider, this initiative allows both citizens and institutions to settle invoices issued by Lugano utilizing these leading digital currencies. Previously confined to the city's online portal, crypto payments in Lugano were restricted, but this update opens doors to settle all invoices, irrespective of their type or amount.
This development is part of Lugano's broader Plan B, aiming to revolutionize the city's financial infrastructure through Tether and Bitcoin technology. The collaborative effort involves integrating blockchain technology into everyday life, with the city partnering specifically with Tether to achieve these objectives.
Bitcoin Suisse plays a pivotal role in managing the technical aspects of crypto payments for the city. Leveraging QR-Bill technology, Lugano's residents can conveniently scan the QR code on their invoices for prompt payments. Upon scanning, individuals and institutions can choose their preferred cryptocurrency and wallet to complete the transaction seamlessly.
Armin Schmid, Bitcoin Suisse's Chief Product Officer, expressed excitement about Lugano's adoption of Bitcoin technology, highlighting the growing trend among Swiss municipalities. He stated, "It is great to see that more and more Swiss municipalities are offering payments in cryptocurrencies as an option available to both citizens and companies, complementing traditional payment methods such as post-office counters and e-banking platforms."
While Tether has yet to respond to inquiries from CryptoSlate at the time of this announcement, Lugano joins other Swiss cities fostering a pro-crypto environment. Bitcoin Suisse actively contributes as the technical infrastructure provider for crypto payment services in Zug City, the Canton of Zug, and the municipality of Zermatt.
