Would you like some ice in your Pepsi? There's no doubt that this Rolex GMT Master 2 has stones, and you'll need a pair of your own to wear the boldest Rolex GMT yet offered to watch buyers. Launched at Baselworld 2007, the GMT "116759SARU" offers liberal doses of real sapphires, diamonds, and rubies.
The Rolex GMT Master II, like its single-timezone predecessor, is best recognized with the blue and red bezel affectionately described as the "Pepsi" bezel by Rolex buyers and Rolex collectors. While other bezel designs exist, the original remains the favorite. Here, Rolex has upgraded bezel with 18-karat white gold, 23 diamonds, 18 rubies, and 18 sapphires.
All Rolex gems are either baguette or brilliant cut, and each is matched by hand to ensure total conformity of color, clarity, cut, and carat weights prior to placement in an "invisible channel" that features no setting gold between the stones. The bi-directional bezel retains is function as a timing device, and one diamond is placed every five minutes across the bezel to permit reading. While no longer a GMT bezel, the device more than compensates with a spectacular appearance.
The case of the 116759SARU is based on the Rolex GMT 116719BLRO; it is 18-karat Rolex grey gold (white gold) that is white straight through and never requires rhodium plating. A Rolex Triplock crown ensures 100-mete water resistance, and a Rolex Oyster bracelet keeps the GMT anchored to its owner's wrist. The Oyster clasp features Rolex's tool-free Easylink 5mm adjustment device. 76 individual brilliant cut diamonds feature on the diamond paved crown guards and lugs.
Inside the Rolex Oyster case, a manufacture caliber 3186 automatic movement ticks at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement can track two independent time zones in 12 hour and 24 hour formats. Hacking (stop seconds), COSC Swiss chronometer certification, and Rolex "Superlative Chronometer" (+/-2 seconds per 24hr) certifications are standard. The movement features a free sprung balance with Rolex Microstella variable inertia masses, and full balance bridge compounds the toughness of the movement. Rolex watchmakers employ a Breguet overcoil hairspring with Parachrom Blue antimagnetic alloy.
The Rolex GMT-Master II features a 40mm 18k white gold case with a sapphire, ruby and diamond bezel surrounding a black dial on a 18k white gold bracelet with an 18k white gold folding buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT. The watch also measures 11.9mm in thickness and 48.2mm from lug-to-lug.
