Why can't we just place a space station on the moon?

sounds interesting and useful. It could be a nice stop to rest on the way from Earth to further into the solar system. But there are good reasons we don't yet have a space station on the moon.
Not many lunar trips
One reason is, we don't send people to the moon very often. Humans have been to the moon just six times - and all between 1969-72. Even those powerful rockets which took them were not made after that. Such rockets are, however, in the works again.
Problem of distance
There is also the tyranny of distance. A space station cannot be launched as a whole . It has to be put together at location, the way the International Space station was. But while the ISS is 400 kms up, the moon is 484,000 kms away.
Problem of supplies
People on a space station require regular supplies of food and power. Sending stuff to the moon , which is three days away, is not as viable an option as sending it to the ISS.
Solutions being considered
Of course, different solutions are being worked on . Like building a station with lunar materials. Growing plants on water for food. Placing the space station at the poles and using solar panels
