Mount St. Helens, a volcano in Washington state, erupted, resulting in one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in U.S. history.
The blast leveled 100's of square miles of forest, spread its ash across several states, and tragically claimed 57 lives.
Mount St. Helens remains an active volcano, closely monitored by scientists to this day.
