(29 Oct 1978) The Cardinals gathered in Rome to elect a successor to Pope John-Paul I and for the first time in four hundred years they chose a non-Italian, Cardinal Karel Wojtyla of Poland. The new Pope took the name of John-Paul II and a large crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square for his inauguration.
