(21 Nov 2014) The United Nations chief is warning that Ebola may be easing in part of West Africa, but says it's still hitting hard in other areas and outpacing the international response.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that if the world speeds its response, "we can contain and end the outbreak by the middle of next year."
But Mali, where six people have died and nearly 500 are being monitored, is of deep concern.
Ban dispatched World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan to that country on Friday.
Chan said authorities in Mali must "have a no-regret policy" as they work to contain the disease.
The two officials urged more health workers to volunteer in the region and reemphasized that travel restrictions aren't helping.
They spoke in Washington following the UN Chief Executive Board's private session on the Ebola response.
