Nitish Kumar, who had a mechanical engineering degree from Patna Engineering College, was born in 1951 to a Dalit family in Bakhtiyarpur, Bihar. Nitish Kumar's inclination towards politics was bound to be due to his father being a freedom fighter. Considered a socialist by ideas, Nitish Kumar is throwing full force for the 2020 assembly elections, whatever the price may have to be paid, but he will not let the chair get away from him.
Nitish Kumar, who learned political qualities from Jai Prakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Karpoori Thakur and George Fernandes, is considered a respected politician. He started his political journey in 1977, just after the JP movement. In the same year, Nitish contested the first assembly election on a Janata Party ticket, but lost to Bhola Prasad Singh. After this, in 1985, he won the election from Harnaut on the Lokdal ticket and reached the assembly.
In 987, Nitish Kumar was made the chairman of the Yuva Lok Dal of Bihar. Nitish Kumar, who is well versed in politics, grew in stature in Bihar, in 1989 he was made the General Secretary of Janata Dal Bihar. Nitish Kumar was now getting to know the people of Bihar very well, the Janata Dal now started playing big bets on him.
After electoral success in the 9th Lok Sabha, Nitish Kumar was made Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperative Department in the Central Government. He held this post from April 1990 to November 1990. In the meantime, again in 1991, Lok Sabha elections were held in the country amidst political turmoil at the center. Nitish Kumar also won this election and became a member of the 10th Lok Sabha. It was only in 1991 that the Janata Dal entrusted the responsibility of party general secretary to Nitish Kumar as well as the responsibility of deputy leader of the party in Parliament.
In 1993, Nitish Kumar was made the chairman of the Agriculture Committee. Nitish Kumar's political journey continued, meanwhile, in 1996, the election knocked once again and Nitish Kumar again won the election and reached the 11th Lok Sabha. He was a member of the Defense Committee from 1996 to 1998. Elections were again held in the country in 1998, Nitish was again in the electoral fray and once again he was successful, he became a member of the 12th Lok Sabha.
From 1998 to 1999 he was the Railway Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. But the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee fell in 1999. Lok Sabha elections were held in the country again, Nitish reached the Lok Sabha for the 5th consecutive time by winning the 13th Lok Sabha elections as well. This time he was given the responsibility of Agriculture Minister in the Atal Cabinet. In the year 2000, Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of Bihar for a mere 7 days. His first term as Chief Minister of Bihar ran from 3 March 2000 to 10 March 2000. In fact, the Atal-led NDA had 151 MLAs in the 324-member assembly at that time, while Lalu Prasad Yadav had 159 MLAs. At that time 163 members were needed to form the government, it was not easy to prove majority by both the parties, while Nitish resigned from his post before being defeated in the floor test.
In the year 2001, he was also given additional charge of Ministry of Railways. He was the Railway Minister from 2001 to 2004. As railway minister Nitish Kumar introduced online ticket booking facility in 2002, as well as revolutionized the railways by providing instant ticket booking facility. In 2004, the country again held Lok Sabha elections. The BJP-led NDA lost the election, winning the UPA in the country.
After the political injury of 2000, Nitish Kumar again became the Chief Minister of the state in 2005. This time he completed his term. He was the Chief Minister from 24 November 2005 to 24 November 2010. After this, the NDA was successful in the 2010 assembly elections, Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister. He was the Chief Minister of the state from 2010 to 2014.
The grand alliance was a big success in the assembly elections. The Mahagathbandhan won a record 178 seats in the 243-seat Bihar assembly. Nitish Kumar sworn in as Chief Minister.
