America is in the midst of an opioid crisis that is the fuel for a drug overdose epidemic now claiming more lives than car accidents. In fact, more Americans died of overdose in 2014 than in any other year on record – 47,000.
The current crisis demands we do more to save lives, starting with the way we treat people who have opioid use disorders. At the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, we have developed an innovative treatment approach called COR-12 that incorporates all of the best evidence-based treatments and practices, utilizing medications within a therapeutic context, maintaining the ultimate goal of abstinence. It’s an emerging best practice focused on both immediate stabilization and long-term recovery, and involves a collaborative approach among multiple care providers at multiple levels of care.
The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation also is leading the fight against opioids on the educational and advocacy fronts, mobilizing communities; educating policymakers, media and consumers; and training other healthcare providers.
