The Askja volcanic system is 200km long and stretches trough half of Iceland and the 1875 eruption became one of the worst natural disaster since the settlement 1100 years ago. Tens of thousands og Icelanders moved to the USA and Canada due to the hardship that followed the eruption when farmlands in east iceland became unusable for years. The 1875 eruption will not repeat is self, but could it be that the next one will be even worse? Many experts believe that we will find out soon enough.
