Throughout our lives, we are surrounded by superstitious beliefs. From breaking mirrors to carrying a rabbit’s foot, some of these superstitions bring bad luck, and some bring good.

When it comes to money, I bet we all wish we could have a bit more luck. Growing up, one lucky thing I learned about was that your left hand itching means money coming into your life.

Based on a 2019 research study by YouGov, only about 1 in 4 Americans believe in superstitions, with most of them ranging from age 25 to 34. If you are not one of those superstitious few, itchy hands may simply just be itchy hands.

According to Healthline, itchy palms may also be a sign of: Dry skin, Skin damage, Allergies, Psoriasis, Eczema, or Diabetes.

However, if you’re experiencing an itchy left palm (or itchy right palm) and you are spiritual, it can mean something completely different. According to different cultures around the world, one palm itching symbolizes that you will receive money, and the other means you will lose money.

According to my wise young mother, your left hand itching means that you are about to come into some money.

Left to receive, right to give.

This good fortune you are about to receive could come in many different forms and amounts. You could find a shiny quarter on the ground or win the lottery for a billion dollars.

Mary Shammas won $64 million dollars in 2010 from the Mega Millions. She was riding the bus home in Brooklyn, New York when she had a very itchy left hand. So, she got off the bus and went to buy a lottery ticket.

Her left palm was itching so much, she knew it must have meant something, and she was right! That night, she became a millionaire. According to Fox News, she won using her favorite lottery numbers, (5, 14, 17, 19, 24, & 25).

On the other hand (literally), my mother also let me know that the fortunate hand for each person is different. In order to know yours, you have to track what happens in the days after you experience your palms itching.

Also, it’s believed that you should have someone scratch that lucky palm with their opposite hand to enhance the fortune. You can also enhance it by scratching your palm with wood.

There are also things to be said about itching hands from a religious standpoint. In the Bible, it says... “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” – (Isaiah 41:13 New International Version (NIV))

In the Hindu religion, the Goddess Lakshmi symbolizes good fortune, wealth, fertility, and prosperity. When your left palm itches, people in India believe it means that the Goddess is leaving you. Therefore, right to receive, left to give. However, the meaning of the left hand itching is different for a female. The left palm itching is supposed to bring fortune for her, while the right hand itching means the female will lose money.
