Thomas Jefferson Biography
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was an American Founding Father, politician, and statesman who is perhaps best known for drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which declared the thirteen American colonies free and independent states from British rule.
Born into a wealthy family in Virginia, Jefferson was a gifted student who studied at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. After completing his education, he became a lawyer and eventually served as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, where he became known for his eloquent speeches and his opposition to British taxation without representation.
In 1775, Jefferson was elected to the Continental Congress, where he joined other leading figures in the struggle for American independence, including John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. The following year, he was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence, which he based on his belief in natural rights, limited government, and the right of the people to revolution.
After the American Revolution, Jefferson served as the first Secretary of State under President George Washington and later as the second Vice President of the United States under President John Adams. In 1801, he was elected as the third President of the United States and served two terms in office, during which he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase from France and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which explored the newly acquired territory.
Jefferson was also a prolific writer and thinker, and he is known for his contributions to the fields of law, philosophy, and political theory. He founded the University of Virginia and was a proponent of public education, religious freedom, and the separation of church and state.
In his personal life, Jefferson was married to Martha Wayles Skelton, with whom he had six children. He was also known to have had a long-standing relationship with one of his slaves, Sally Hemings, with whom he fathered several children.
Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and is remembered as one of the most influential figures in American history.
