Let me tell you the story of Germán Silva. Germán grew up in a small town in Mexico. With 12 brothers and sisters. He ran five miles a day to get to school and back. Silva’s father thought running was foolishness. His father wanted him to run the family business. Silva wanted to run.
He ran in a forest outside Mexico City at high altitude. He ran up the side of a volcano. His father said “Silva you are going the wrong way in life.” Silva didn’t listen. He wanted to run.
He started to race. First he raced 3,000 meters. Then he raced 10,000 meters. Now he raced the marathon. He was good. Real good.
1994. New York City Marathon. After 26 miles, he was out in front with another guy.
Running neck-to-neck. You know how they have cars with the cameramen filming the runners? Well, one camera car turned off the marathon route. Silva followed the car and took a right turn, but it was the WRONG way. He had to turn back, but now he was behind the other runner. 40 meters behind. Silva ran as fast as he could. 39 seconds before the end, Silva passed the other guy and WON. He beat the other runner by 2 seconds, and ran the last mile in 5:15.
After that, people called him WRONG WAY SILVA.
Germán Silva didn’t care. People told him he went the wrong way all his life.
The next year he ran the NYC marathon again. And SILVA won. Back to back.
People will tell you what is the right way and what is the wrong way. Germán Silva made the wrong way, his OWN way.
