In the city of San Francisco, Fisherman's Wharf is a popular tourist destination and a residential area. Ghirardelli Square, Van Ness Avenue, Pier 35, and Kearny Street are just a few of the points along the northern waterfront that it serves. The Powell-Hyde cable car line connects to Fisherman's Wharf Aquatic Park, while the Powell-Mason cable car line is just a few blocks away.
During the late 1800s, a group of Italian immigrant fisherman arrived in San Francisco to take advantage of the city's gold rush, and this sector of Fisherman's Wharf is named and defined after them. Paladini Fish Company owner Achille Paladini, dubbed the "Fish King," was a well-known fish trader in the area. Immigrants from Italy were drawn to the North Beach area along the dock to fish for local delights like Dungeness crab and scallops. There was a large fishing fleet based at San Francisco at the time, and it remains so now. Although the area was redeveloped in the 1970s and 1980s to become a tourist attraction, many fishermen and their boats are still present.
