before i say anything else, i wanna give a shoutout to this animatic which introduced me to the song. after hearing the lyrics i was really inspired to do this with a certain few of my characters, so even if youre not in the fandom i highly recommend checking it out: [ Ссылка ]
im tempted to try to animate this, but considering the animatic alone has 150+ frames and 40+ shots, idk if it'll happen. maybe someday.
Backstory:
This story takes place in the Toska, home to dangerous smoke-creatures simply called Spirits and a variety of animals who seem to have no idea how their ancestors ended up there. As far as they know, there is no way in and no way out--new inhabitants just tend to wake up there. The main characters here are North and Siiy, but Curie has a supporting role in this. Shortly after North replaced the old leader at an abnormally young age, Curie openly challenged her way of dealing with the Spirits. Curie had always been slightly unhinged, and her proposed method would have likely ended in a bloodbath. After an argument with North, she isolated herself and chose to side with the spirits for fear she'd die otherwise, often capturing other members of the Toska and performing experiments on them.
One of these experiments was Siiy, the childhood best friend of North's. At birth, his eye was damaged and his heart weak, so often he was unable to do things that others could. Curie tricked him into believing that she'd fix this, but she really toyed with his body until he was a personal soldier. Siiy felt indebted to her, but North suspected her true intentions. Much strain was placed on their relationship. Their friendship officially broke off when a fight became physical and Siiy clawed North's eye. She barely survived infection and had to have the eye removed, for a long while leaving her half-blind and heartbroken in a role she was far too young to have.
Though North was as good a leader as she could have been, the inhabitants of the Toska grew increasingly miserable as the years went on. Curie blamed North and decided to set a trap, sending Siiy out to "talk" to her. Since the Spirits are harmed by light, the plan was to keep her busy until the sun set so the Spirits could kill her. She begs him to get Curie to leave her people alone, while Siiy accuses her of being the root cause of the Toska's misery. For a long while, they argue. However, the plan goes awry. Siiy becomes too caught up in his emotions and arguing with his former friend, not noticing that the sun has set. The Spirit sent to kill North targets him instead, and for a few moments he believes he is going to die. Just as the creature is about to reach him, North bodyslams it away. The Spirit screeches and dissipates into smoke, leading North to an awkward landing. Unable to stop, she skids helplessly along the ground and tumbles down to her death. Siiy, shocked and heartbroken by her sacrifice, is left questioning where his loyalties should lie.
