Day 2 of our Mongolia adventure takes us across the stunning landscapes of Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar. It’s an exciting city with a rich history and many historical places to visit.
Kicking off our morning tour in the comfort of the beautiful Kempinski Hotel, a hearty breakfast prepares us for the exciting day ahead. To make the most of our exploration, we opted for a private driver, as public transport in Mongolia is not very foreign-friendly.
Our journey started at the Zaisan Monument, 20 minutes away from the city center. Built in the 1970s, the monument commemorates the Soviet-Mongolian soldiers of World War II. A striking granite sculpture of a soldier proudly dominates the area, an esthetic typical for Soviet-era monuments.
Next, our Ulaanbaatar travel exploration leads us to the Palace of the Bogd Khan. Erected in the early 20th century, this palace is an architectural masterpiece that once served as the residence of the last monarch of Mongolia, the Bogd Khan. Today, it is a museum showcasing the rich history of the Mongolian Empire. In addition to the ornate rooms housing beautiful Mongolian artwork and traditional furniture, the palace is home to the Peace and Happiness Gate. Constructed between 1912-1919, this magnificent structure is a testament to Mongolia's declaration of independence on December 29, 1911.
Our exploration continues at the Mongolian Museum of History. Located in Ulaanbaatar’s heart, the museum has a comprehensive collection depicting the rich Mongolian history.
Our journey concludes at the tranquil Gandan Tegchinlen, a Buddhist monastery on Ulaanbaatar’s outskirts. Established in the 18th century, the monastery has a history deeply rooted in Mongolia's Buddhist tradition. Despite being destroyed during the communist era in the 1930s, it was restored in the 1990s.
With this day 2 of our Mongolia trip is concluded. Stay tuned for our next adventure outside of Ulaanbaatar, where we will visit the oversized monument of Chinggis Khan and the beautiful natural formation of Turtle Rock in Ghorki-Terelj National Park.
