It's well known that the Sony a7S III and its related cinema camera sibling, the FX3, are exceptional performers in terms of low light and capturing crisp images in the darkest of dimly-lit scenes. This is no surprise given these cameras have a maximum extended ISO of 409,600. However, one of the largest additional reasons the a7S III/FX3 performs as well as it does in low light is ultimately due to its not as widely publicized dual gain ISO.
This is not quite a "dual native" ISO, in that noise performance at this second ISO value is not as clean as it is at its base ISO. However, it provides two values (a base, and high value) with each gamma curve in the camera that noise performance and the image quality looks and performs at its best. Thus, enabling you to still get a great looking image even in extremely dark scenes.
I'll first discuss the two key things to look for when identifying the base ISO of any gamma curve in the camera (e.g. Cine4, HLG, S-Cinetone, S-Log3). Following this, I'll discuss the two methods you can utilize to identify the second, higher clean ISO value. It is worth noting that these ISO numbers will vary per gamma curve/picture profile used in the camera. Thus, it's more critical to remember the means by which you can find these, rather than to necessarily memorize any specific numbers, as these won't be universally applicable.
Let me know if technical tips and tricks with Sony mirrorless cameras like my a7S III are helpful, and I will try to make more!
