In this video, we go to Jay Fai! It's a one star Michelin restaurant in Bangkok that is street food. So a very high honor. It is known for the giant crab omelet and of course Jay Fai herself. She is the only one that cooks and seems to cook all day without taking any breaks because the place is always crazy busy. She is known for her goggles that she wears while cooking. From what I read she doesn't like the attention and didn't even know what a Michelin star was when they awarded her with it.
I really wanted to go there because I have never been to a Michelin star restaurant before and thought it would be a good opportunity to go to one for a reasonable price.
We got a hotel room close by and tried the first night after we checked in to the hotel. We got there and there was a huge wait. To get on a reservation list, you would have to wait about 5 months, but they have a first come first serve list. By the time we got there it was booked for the night with all sorts of people waiting for a table. There are only 5 or six tables in the whole place so that is one of the reason why it is always busy, they don't flip many covers.
So we struck out the first night and went and had some food in China town. The next day we woke up early and went to put our name on the list as soon as they opened. We were the first on the list, meaning once they opened we would get a table. We had a coffee at the place next door and waited for a few hours.
Once they opened we were seated and got the chef's table, meaning the closet table to the kitchen where we could see her work.
It was really great food, and expensive for Thai standards. But overall, I didn't think it was Michelin star impressive. But I really enjoyed the experience and would recommend to other people if they didn't have to wait as long as we did.
